Forever! Once you've enrolled and paid, you'll have access to the course material for as long as you need. So devour it all in one weekend or take things slow. It's your choice!

The good news is that most of what you need is simple and affordable. The pricier items are your concertina sketchbook, Posca pens and gesso — mainly because of pot size — but everything else is very budget friendly.

The list below is based on what Karen uses in her demonstrations, but you're always welcome to work with what you already have and adapt as you go.

These lessons are based an an intensive day workshop. In this online version you have the time and opportunity to actually sketch on location, so it could be completed in a weekend or an hour for each lesson = six hours.

The course is self paced; you can complete it when you have time. It may be a binge for a day or spread over 6 weeks. You have lifetime access to the course.

There are six lessons and each has 2-4 short videos, lists and pdf examples to print off. There are comment boxes after each lesson and there is a private facebook group if you wish to share.

Not at all. My sketchbooks are much more about mark making and exciting surfaces, with as little or as much drawing as you like.

What Materials Will You Need?

Here is a list of the equipment you will need to complete the course. I have added links as suggestions of where to buy, just click on the link. You will find many items on the high street such as masking tape, labels and spray bottles. My apologies, most links are UK based, please feel free to email me with suppliers for other countries.

1. Concertina sketchbook A5 + 2 big elastic bands. I love Seawhite books as the paper is perfect, find them at artesaver.co.uk. I have tried others but always come back to Seawhite for the quality and price. If you add the code KS10 I do get a small rebate. You can also try Hahnemühle, Moleskine, Sennelier and Great Art.

2. Pencil case

3. White sticky labels (address labels work well)

4. White gesso

5. Pritt stick and PVA glue

6. Collage papers: old envelopes, stamps, patterned papers, photocopies, photographs, tickets, labels, wrapping paper. You will only need small amounts so start collecting!

7. Magazine pages with lots of print and dark areas. In the UK, the Saturday Guardian magazine is ideal. Car adverts and portraits often have the most black around the subject.

8. Scissors or scalpel

9. Soft brushes for water based wash

10. Inks — three types work best together:

    → Indian ink (any stockist, waterproof when dry)

    → Quink ink (lovely qualities, though not absolutely essential)

    → Seawhite ink (not waterproof when dry, search specifically for "Seawhite Indian Ink" as their labelling can be confusing). The bottles are large so great value for money. The key is simply having an ink with different qualities to the other two, any similar ink will do.

11. Posca pens in two sizes (small and large) in black and white, plus other colours of your choice

12. Berol fineliner pen — Pilot fineliner, Papermate Grip Roller and Bic Grip Roller are also good water soluble alternatives

13. Artgraf — Inktense or water soluble crayons also work well

14. Spray bottle (small)

15. Fine sandpaper

16. Water container — a wide mouth plastic jar works well

17. Kitchen roll and/or wet wipes

18. Old credit cards to use as glue spreaders, or stiff paint brushes
